Quite a lot going on these days in Australia and on the WTA tour: The 2022 season will open not only in Adelaide, where Ashleigh Barty won the title with a sovereign 6: 3 and 6: 2 against Elena Rybakina, but also in Melbourne Park where the Australian Open will begin on January 17th. And there with a double blow.

And so there were two tournament winners to celebrate in Melbourne on Sunday. In the somewhat more prominent final of Summer Set 1, Simona Halep defeated Russian Veronika Kudermetova 6: 2 and 6: 3. It took Halep 74 minutes to wrap up her 23rd career triumph. The Romanian was most recently successful in Rome in 2020.

In the second WTA Tour 250 event, the Melbourne Summer Set 2, which took place at the same time, Amanda Anisimova won the title. The American defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus 7: 5, 1: 6 and 6: 4. Anisimova had the semi-finals of the French Open in 2019, after which she was slowed down by personal blows of fate and injuries. After a good preparation for the new year, she now seems to be on the way up again.
