Monday went quite well for the German women at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. With Anna-Lena Friedsam, Tamara Korpatsch and Laura Siegemund, three of the four DTB starters survived the first qualifying round. Only Eva Lys had to give up at the start.

The 21-year-old had to give up against Dayana Yastremska with a score of 1:5 in the first set. Things went better for Friedsam (7: 6 (3) and 6: 1 against Moyuka Uchijima), Korpatsch (6: 4 and 6: 1 against Elina Avanesyan) and Siegemund (6: 3 and 6: 2 against Viktoria Hruncakova). All three players are one win away from entering the main draw.

The German men also had reason to celebrate on Monday. Daniel Altmaier, Jan-Lennard Struff and Yannick Hanfmann advanced to the second qualifying round.
