It is not surprising that the third-round meeting between Bianca Andreescu and Amanda Anisimova at the WTA Tour 1000 tournament in Miami is the first at the very highest WTA level. The Canadian had to take a 15-month break soon after her coup at the US Open 2019 and did not return to the tour until early 2021. And Anisimova didn't play as much as she actually wanted either - be it due to personal blows of fate (such as the sudden death of her father) or injuries.

One of the reasons why the two players were listed below on the list of favorites for Miami. Which could be a mistake, especially in the case of Andreescu. The 20-year-old won out of nowhere in Indian Wells two years ago, then in Canada and finally in New York City. Of the seven matches she has played after her comeback, Andreescu has won five, the last in round two against Theresa Martincova 7: 6 (5) and 6: 2.

Andreescu loses last match against Anisimova

Anisimova, who had to do without the trip to Australia due to a positive COVID-19 test and also had to withdraw in Doha because she injured her ankle on site, also had only minor problems with Sloane Stephens at 6: 3, 6: 3 . And so it comes to the first meeting of two players at the adult level who played against each other more often when they were junior. Last time at the renowned Eddie Herr Tournament in 2015.

Andreescu can still remember this game well. “It's nice to have another player I grew up with on tour. But the match back then was tough. I lost and was really pissed off afterwards. Now I'm a different player, and so is she, so I'm expecting the unexpected. ”The expectations for the winner are clear: In the round of 16 it will be either Garbine Muguruza or Anna Kalinskaya.
