WTA Moscow: Kiki Bertens trembles in the quarterfinals

Kiki Bertens reached the round of the last eight at the WTA tournament in Moscow with a three-set win over Kaia Kanepi, thus securing their chance of participating in the WTA Finals in Shenzhen.

Bertens prevailed in their last sixteen against the Estin Kanepi with 4: 6, 6: 3 and 7: 5 by. The Dutchman, who lost to Cori Gauff last week in Linz, was not in her best shape in Moscow: Bertens made eight double mistakes. In the second set, the favorite was back with 1: 3, but then won five games in a row.

After 2:18 hours of play time, the 27-year-old from Wateringen secured her place in the round of the last eight. And thus kept her ninth place in the live ranking in the Race to Shenzhen.

Possible semi-final against Bencic

This is expected to be enough for a fixed place, after it is not likely that Serena Williams, currently Eighth, the way to China for the season finale starts. Bertens' biggest competitor is Belinda Bencic, who had already entered the quarter-finals on Wednesday. And there meets Kirsten Flipkens. Bertens plays either against Anastasija Sevastova or Kristina Mladenovic. In the semi-final, there could be a direct clash between Bertens and Bencic.

Elina Svitolina, who already has her place in Shenzhen, is eliminated. The Ukrainian, who won the season final last year, lost to Russian Veronika Kudermetova 2-6, 6-1 and 5-7.
