Until her quarter-finals, Simona Halep hadn't really gotten going in Prague. The world number two took three sets twice to advance one round in the Czech capital. In the quarter-finals, however, the Romanian made short work of the Polish lucky loser Magdalena Frech - 6: 2 and 6: 0 after 59 minutes. Halep now meets Irina-Camelia Begu or Sara Sorribes Tormo.
The third-placed Elise Mertens had to fight a lot more in her quarter-finals. In the end, the Belgian prevailed against the resurgent Eugenie Bouchard after more than 2:15 hours of play with 6: 4, 1: 6 and 6: 4. Mertens will now face Krystina Pliskova in the semifinals, who in turn benefited from an injury to her opponent Ana Bogdan with a score of 2: 5.
