Collins beat former world number 1 Simona Halep 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the evening session. Halep had to endure a moment of shock when she knuckled her right foot, but she was able to continue playing.
Collins now meets Amanda Anisimova, who won against Belinda Bencic in the afternoon.
Paula Badosa, who had no problems in the 6: 2, 6: 1 against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, also progressed confidently. "It was closer than the result says," she explained anyway - a playing time of at least 1 hour and 17 minutes also testifies to this. The Spaniard now meets Daria Kasatkina, who beat US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez 4: 6, 6: 3, 7: 6 (2).
On the other hand, Garbine Muguruza was eliminated in a rather dramatic match against Yulia Putintseva - 6: 3, 6: 7 (4), 1: 6 according to the Spaniard, who clashed with Putintseva after being shot at the net.
Iga Swiatek, Maria Sakkari and Ons Jabeur had previously played their matches successfully.
