At some point the tank was simply empty at Victoria Azarenka: The Belarusian had won the title at Cincinnati, but then failed to Naomi Osaka in the final of the US Open. And Azarenka had also shown strong in Rome, for example not leaving a single game for the Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin.
Against Garbine Muguruza, who was inferior to Kenin in Melbourne, Azarenka's run now stopped. The Spaniard won 3: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 4 and will play in the semi-finals against Simona Halep on Sunday, who benefited from the Kazakhstan's abandonment against Yulia Putintseva with a score of 6: 2 and 2: 0.
Marketa Vondrousova, in the 2019 French Open final, made short work of the two-time Rome winner Elina Svitolina, sending the Ukrainian home 6: 3 and 6: 0. Vondrousova faces either defending champion Karolina Pliskova or Elise Mertens.
