Last week, Ons Jabeur made history for the Arab world by winning the WTA Tour 1000 tournament in Madrid, and this week the 27-year-old is still going strong. At the clay court classic in Rome, a tournament in the same category as that in the Spanish capital, the Tunisian is already in the round of eight. The North African, ranked 9th in the Eternal City, clearly defeated Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6:3, 6:2 in the round of 16.
Now against Sakkari for the semifinals
It is already the best result for Jabeur at the highly endowed Combined event in Italy, as she failed to qualify in 2019 and was unable to win a game in September 2020 either. In the quarterfinals it gets the current world number 7. to do with the Greek Maria Sakkari, who in turn was able to defeat the American Coco Gauff 6: 4, 7: 5. In the head-to-head of the two, it is currently balanced 1: 1.
Daria Kasatkina is also one round ahead with a surprising 6:4-6:4 win over second seed Paula Badosa. She now meets Switzerland's Jill Teichmann, who defeated Kazakh Elena Rybakina in three sets 6:7 (3), 6:3, 7:5. The Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins did not cut a good figure in her quarterfinals. She lost to her compatriot Amanda Anisimova without a hitch 2: 6, 2: 6.
Here the single tableau from Rome.
