Sofia Kenin will probably not forget the trip to Australia at the beginning of 2021, as well as the one a year ago: at that time, she won her first Grand Slam title in Melbourne, beating Garbine Muguruza in the final. This year, due to a positive Corona case, Kenin had to go into a two-week hard quarantine on her plane and, unlike most of her competitors, could not train for 14 days.

The early exit at the Australian Open against Kaia Kanepi therefore came as no surprise. But that's not all: Kenin took part in the Philip Island Trophy this week, losing to the Australian wild card Olivia Gadecki in her first match. Kenin was apparently already feeling pain and went to a hospital in Melbourne on Monday. There she was operated on the appendix, as Kenin announced on Twitter.
