Excellent performance by the Swiss Belinda Bencic at the WTA Tour 1000 tournament in Toronto: The current number twelve in the women's rankings defeated the Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, who was four positions higher, 6:1, 6:3 after only 63 minutes of play. So far it had been a direct comparison between the two opponents 1:1. The Swiss woman's next opponent will be Beatriz Haddad Maia, who surprisingly defeated number one Iga Swiatek in three sets .

The last remaining Canadian hope Bianca Andreescu, who lost 5:7, 7:5, 6:2 against the Chinese Qinwen Zheng, was eliminated. The Asian is now calling for Karolina Pliskova. The Czech, ranked fourteen, was able to take number three Maria Sakkari out of the competition with 6:1, 6:7 (9) 6:3.

Also in the quarterfinals are Simona Halep (6:2, 7:5 against Jill Teichmann), Cori Gauff (7:5,4:6,7:6(4) thriller against Aryna Sabalenka), Jessica Pegula (3:6, 6:0, 7:5 against Camilla Giorgi) and Yulia Putintseva (6:3, 7:5 against Alison Riske-Amritraj).
