Victoria Azarenka is unable to compete in the Toronto WTA 1000 event

Bitter news for all fans of Victoria Azarenka: The Belarusian cannot take part in the WTA 1000 event in Toronto as planned. The Belarusian announced this on Sunday evening (CET) via social media. The reason for this are problems with the visa of the former number one in the WTA world rankings.

"I would like to inform you that unfortunately I had to pull out of the tournament in Toronto because my visa was not accepted. It's really disappointing," wrote Azarenka. It is very sad for her to have to miss one of her favorite tournaments on the WTA calendar. "I love playing in Canada."

Azarenka misses first-round cracker against Bencic

Azarenka should have faced Belinda Bencic in round one, the winner would be a possible round two opponent for Serena Williams, who will be in Toronto for the second tournament since her return. The American opens in Canada against a qualifier.

For Azarenka, however, things continue at the WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati, where the Belarusian has already had the feeling of title honors twice. In Toronto, despite Azarenka's cancellation, one can look forward to one of the strongest fields of participants of the year - 16 of the best 17 players in the world rankings are at the start.
