"We really didn't take this decision lightly and tried to hold the tournament in Nuremberg until the last minute," said tournament director Sandra Reichel. After the withdrawal of the main sponsor of Nuremberg Insurance, economic reasons ultimately led to the decision for the "alternative decision" according to Reichel.
The new license holder will inform in due course where the competition will take place in the future, it said in a press release. The last winner of the tournament was Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, who triumphed last May.
"We all really put a lot of energy and love into this tournament and can be proud of what we have achieved together in Nuremberg," added Reichel.
Andrea Petkovic was the only German player in the 2013 final of Nuremberg. At that time she was conquered by Simona Halep. A year later, Eugenie Bouchard defeated Karolina Pliskova in the final and won her last single title to date.
