The plans for a short-term implementation of the event were announced only last week . As the Carinthian regional association has now known, it was not possible to implement the WTA requirements in the area of Covid-19 measures until the planned start of the tournament on August 31. In addition, there were difficulties in obtaining a positive event approval notification from the competent authority.

After a planned Ironman competition in Klagenfurt will not take place in September, the cancellation of the WTA tournament is another setback for Austrian sport. “After this rejection, the next bad news for the sport follows a few hours later with the cancellation of the WTA tournament in Pörtschach,” said Carinthian Governor Peter Kaiser.

However, the plans for a tournament in Pörtschach are not completely off the table. Representatives of the WTA had informed the organizer that they would be interested in hosting the sand court event in 2021.
