WTA tournament in Tokyo canceled due to coronavirus pandemic

The traditional women's tennis tournament in Tokyo is canceled for the first time this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to media reports, the organizers said on Tuesday that the cancellation was the best decision in the interest of public health, especially given the moderate but statistically significant second wave of infections in Japan.

The tournament, which was held for the first time in 1984, was supposed to take place in September and had been postponed to early November due to the pandemic. The ATP event in the Olympic city of 2021 was canceled in mid-June.

Tokyo has been on the WTA tour calendar since 1976. Former winners of the individual competition are Ana Ivanovic, Agnieszka Radwanska (2), and record winner Martina Hingis (5). Naomi Osaka celebrated a home triumph last year.

WTA Tour: All events in China canceled

In the past week, the tournaments for women and men in autumn in China had already been canceled for this year. The WTA tour plans to resume operations next Monday with the tournament in Palermo.

The men's restart in Washington from August 14 has been canceled a long time ago. In addition, the men's organization ATP now canceled two sub-class Challenger tournaments in Orlando, which were planned for August 24 and 31 in Florida.

During these two weeks, the ATP tour will continue with the Cincinnati Masters 1000 tournament and the US Open, each in New York. A decision on whether this will remain so is expected by Friday. The international professional tours have been interrupted since March.
