WTA Washington: Emma Raducanu loses on doubles debut

Emma Raducanu (WTA No. 10) was eliminated at the WTA tournament in Washington in doubles at the start. Actually not a special thing - if it wasn't for a crazy thing.

Raducanu and partner Clara Tauson lost 4:6, 1:6 to the three seeded doubles experts Lucie Hradecka/Monica Niculescu.

What was remarkable? Raducanu made her "adult" debut in doubles. Because, as the journalist Tumaini Carayol brought to light these days, Raducanu had never played an official doubles at WTA or ITF level in the active area. Accordingly, it is still unranked here.

Only five junior tournaments at Raducanu

It almost came to an official appearance in 2020, when Raducanu was registered alongside Naiktha Bains in the Fed Cup game against Slovakia. However, the decisive doubles match did not take place because Slovakia was already 3:1 in the lead after the singles. (The double pairing could also have been changed.)

And so you have to look back a long way to catch a Raducanu doubles - back to 2017, when the then 14-year-old played a doubles at the junior competition in Wimbledon (but lost in round 1). However, that didn't happen too often at the time - Raducanu only had five tournaments in their youth career statistics (2 wins, 5 defeats). And which is also surprising because double results also count for the junior ranking.

Is her trial coach Dmitry Tursunov responsible for her report in Washington? He has won seven doubles titles over the course of his career. And will there be a sequel? In any case, Raducanu and Tauson had fun, and in the meantime even had a little run when they managed to make it 4:5 after a quick 0:4.
