Venus Williams suffered a defeat in her singles comeback in Washington

The seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams lost her singles comeback after a break of almost a year: The American had to give up qualifier Rebecca Marino at the WTA Tour 250 event in Washington after 1:50 hours of play 6: 4, 1: 6, 4: 6 beaten. The Canadian will now face either Germany's Andrea Petkovic or Denmark's Carla Tauson in the round of 16.

On her return to the women's tour, Williams kept flashing her old strengths, but also made too many unforced mistakes. "I'm just a little rusty," Williams said after the match. "I gave it my all, even in the third set. I'm still trying to shake off some dust. That's to be expected. All I can do now is play another tournament and play better there."

The 42-year-old, who was born in California, was last in action in Chicago at the end of August last year, where she clearly lost in two sets to Su-Wei Hsieh from Taiwan. A month ago, she appeared in the Wimbledon mixed competition with Jamie Murray and, after a thrilling match, only narrowly failed in the second round. Williams now wants to continue working on her comeback at the two WTA Tour 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

Here is the single tableau from Washington.
