In the end, Angelique Kerber drew the line under a more than mixed year of tennis. After her injury-related cancellation for the WTA tournament in Luxembourg, the Kiel native ended her season prematurely. Instead of fighting for several weeks to qualify for the B-WM in Zhuhai, Kerber preferred to relax while drinking coffee on the Baltic Sea. The focus is already on the new year.

Then the 31-year-old wants to find her way back to her old strength. After reaching the preliminary high point of her career with the Wimbledon victory in 2018, Kerber finally experienced more lows than heights in the 2019 calendar year. The much-noticed collaboration with ex-professional Rainer Schüttler did not bring the desired income and ended as early as July. The search for a successor is still ongoing.

After the very promising start to the year, Kerber also got out of step due to physical problems. First she suffered from a flu that had been carried over for months, then a ligament injury in her ankle. Ultimately, therefore, there is a devastating record, especially at the Grand Slam level: the knockout phase out at the Australian Open was followed by a first-round defeat at the French Open, a second-round defeat at Wimbledon and another first-round defeat at the US Open.

Restart 2020?

Kerber won only one match between late June and mid-September. In the world rankings, the former number one fell back to 15th. Not enough for the demands of a three-time Grand Slam winner. The premature end of the season after her minor leg injury in China is now said to bring strength for the return to the absolute world elite.

Already once, in the previous year, after a weak season, she had finally managed to make an even more impressive restart. A new coach is also supposed to help with the comeback, but Kerber does not want to put himself under pressure during the search. She is currently in talks, a decision should be made by the start of the new season. Most recently Kerber was looked after by Dirk Dier during her tournament tour in Asia.
