The 33-year-old lost to French Caroline Garcia after another disappointing performance 6: 3, 2: 6, 4: 6. Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) was also eliminated in the first round.

Kerber, who was last eliminated in Doha in the round of 16, made two quick breaks in the first set, immediately gambled away her advantage and then took over the service twice more from Garcia. The French then equalized after sets, Kerber led 3-0 in the last round, but after that hardly anything succeeded. She made 38 unforced errors.

Siegemund, the German number two, lost against the Russian Anastasia Potapowa 3: 6, 2: 6. The 33-year-old, who was the French Open quarter-finalist last year, is waiting for a top result in 2021. At the Australian Open, she failed in the first round against the 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams, and last week she made it to the second round in Doha as a qualifier.
