Angelique Kerber reached the third round of the US Open one day late. The three-time Grand Slam winner prevailed on Thursday very convincingly 6: 3, 6: 2 against Angelina Kalinina and thus also managed the revenge for the first round defeat in Paris, which the Ukrainian had inflicted on her.
The game had been postponed from Wednesday to Thursday due to the storm in New York, Kerber was stuck on the system until after midnight in heavy rain and strong gusts of wind.
The tournament winner from 2016 will meet the American Sloane Stephens on Friday, who triumphed at the US Open a year after the top German player and now convincingly defeated her compatriot Cori Gauff 6: 4, 6: 2. Kerber has only won one match against Stephens and has already suffered five defeats.
