Iga Swiatek will no longer be number one in the WTA rankings after the US Open

Iga Swiatek failed in the round of 16 of the US Open and lost the number one position in the world rankings. The 22-year-old Pole lost to her feared opponent Jelena Ostapenko 6:3, 3:6, 1:6 and had to give up her hope of defending her title in New York early on. The Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka will also replace her at the top of the ranking after 75 weeks.

"I always expect a tough fight against Iga. She's a great player, has won a lot of Slams and is so consistent," said Ostapenko after her win at Arthur Ashe Stadium: "I knew I had to be aggressive and play my game, Because she doesn't like that."

Ostapenko now against Gauff

For Swiatek it was the fourth defeat in her fourth match against the Latvian, who hit her with powerful play from the baseline. The four-time Grand Slam winner from Warsaw missed the chance for her second major title this year after Paris, where Ostapenko celebrated her only major triumph to date in 2017.
