Thiem broke early to 3: 2 in round one, but Munar was able to equalize. The Lichtenwörther then struck again to 6: 5 and shortly afterwards used his second set ball.

In round two, the match had to be temporarily interrupted due to rain at 1-1, but both players remained on the court and could continue playing soon. The 21-year-old Munar seemed to have got the break out of rhythm, he made several mistakes that made it possible for Thiem to break 2-1. The fifth in the world rankings made the preliminary decision with another break to 4: 1.

Especially in the second set Thiem showed a strong performance. He got a total of 20 winners out of 16 unforced errors.
