Djokovic went into his individual against Denis Shapovalov with a lot of pressure. Because Milos Raonic had won the opening game between Serbia and Canada 6: 3, 6: 4 against Dusan Lajovic and thus brought the Canadians 1-0 up.
Djokovic then showed again why he is the man who is the best in crunch time: He won 7: 5, 7: 5 against Denis Shapovalov, it was the only two breaks of the match, just for set and then to win the match. The victory was deserved anyway: Djokovic only had to make one debut on his own serve, Shapovalov did not get a break chance for the entire match - with Djokovic there were at least six in the end.
Djokovic was still fraught with a few question marks last week, a bubble on the batting hand prevented a full match at the invitation tournament in Adelaide. Djokovic had also indicated that there had been a few problems with training in the days before. Not much of that was seen in the first official match of the year.
In doubles, the Djoker then played with buddy Filip Krajinovic, Canada relied on its single players. Without success: Djokovic / Krajinovic won in the end with 7: 5, 7: 6 (4) and thus ensured the 2: 1 success for ATP Cup defending champions Serbia in Group A.
Germany will intervene in the ATP Cup 2021 next night - from 0 a.m. CET, Alexander Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff, Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies will play against Canada. And on the following night (February 4th, also from midnight) against Serbia.
