This match between Dominic Thiem and Benoit Paire was not really a dress rehearsal for the Australian Open. The Frenchman obviously had major problems with his right elbow, which further reduced the quality of Paire's serve, which was not particularly strong anyway. After just 21 minutes, Paire lost the first set 6-1. And gave up.

Thiem said after the match, his opponent did not have the best preparation due to the tough quarantine. He wishes him all the best for the Australian Open. There Dominic Thiem gets to do with Mikhail Kukushkin. Thiem has never played against the Kazakhs, nor against his potential second-round opponents Hugo Dellien or Dominik Koepfer.

At the ATP Cup, the Austrians had no chance of progressing even before the game against France. The Italians with Matteo Berrettini and Fabio Fognini had already secured victory in Group C.
