The four-time Dubai winner converted his second match point after 68 minutes. "I feel really good and play that way. I like these nightly matches. Karen can do it much better than it showed today," said Djokovic after the game.

"I am very focused, but I also enjoy my matches. I am not always so calm on the pitch, I know that. The experience helps me to be patient."

Djokovic beat 19 winners in eleven uncommon mistakes, Khachanov ended up at 9/15. The Serb won 89 percent of the points after the first serve.

In the semi-finals on Friday, Djokovic meets a Frenchman: Gael Monfils clearly beat compatriot Richard Gasquet in two sets in the last match of the day.

In the afternoon Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Jan-Lennard Struff, Dan Evans took Andrey Rublev out of the tournament. For Evans, it is the first career semi-final at an ATP 500 event.
