In the second duel with Giron, Thiem initially made a cold start and quickly fell 2-0 behind. The 2020 US Open champion turned the tables just as quickly, taking a 3-2 lead with a break after a little over fifteen minutes. However, Giron immediately made a small comeback. And after another break to 5: 3, the first round after a playing time of almost 40 minutes couldn't be taken away.

In the second act it was Thiem who set the first exclamation mark with the break to 4: 2. But Giron came right back. After the score was 4: 4, Thiem fended off breakball and brought his service game through. With the break he won the second set 6:4.

After that, Thiem was the boss on the court and didn't let his opponent win a single game.

The quarter-final opponent will not be determined until Thursday. Namely between the fourth seeded Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo and Manuel Guinard from France. The number one of the tournament in Gijon, Andrey Rublev, also enters the game on Thursday. The Russian, who lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals in Astana last week, opens against Ilya Ivashka.
