From sea level in Bastad up to the mountains around Gstaad - both Dominic Thiem and Hugo Gaston had to overcome this challenge in the last few days. Thiem made it to the quarter-finals in Bastad, Gaston was eliminated in the round of 16 against Aslan Karatsev. Judging by the quality of the match, both players managed the transition pretty well. But there can only be one winner, even in entertaining games: And that was Dominic Thiem in Gstaad on Tuesday afternoon, who won 1: 6, 6: 1 and 7: 6 (7).

The only second game between Thiem and the 21-year-old Gaston developed interestingly: at first the Frenchman shone with a lot of wit and great footwork, then Thiem picked up the pace. After 55 minutes, Thiem saw it as 1: 6 and 6: 1.

In the decision, it was Thiem who created the first chances: In the seventh game there were two opportunities for the 28-year-old to take Gaston's serve. The Frenchman served twice on the backhand, both returns sailed wide. Thiem reacted to his cap. But that was about the chances for the setbacks. A tiebreak had to decide.

Federico Delbonis is waiting as the next opponent. The Argentine had no problems with Sweden's Mikael Ymer. Tournament favorite and defending champion Casper Ruud enjoys a bye and starts in the round of 16 against Jiri Lehecka.
