Carlos Alcaraz's career is still too young to really state that the Spaniard is an excellent front runner, a player who doesn't let a lead slip away easily. In no case does it help to be 0: 3 behind after just a few minutes, as happened to Alexander Zverev against Alcaraz on Tuesday. Because, at least on this occasion, the defending champion was not willing to slack off even one iota. Alcaraz won set one 6-1.

The local hero was also the first to knock in the second set as a setback, Zverev fended off a breakball. A few moments later, however, the time had come: Alcaraz took a 3-2 lead with a break, also due to several mistakes with the forehand. The break to 5:2 finally put the lid on the game. After only 82 minutes of play, the favorite converted his third match point.

Alcaraz now against Khachanov

Karen Khachanov, who was able to assert himself in the Russian duel with Monte Carlo champion Andrey Rublev 7: 6 (6) and 6: 4, is now waiting in the quarterfinals.

Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, was eliminated earlier in the afternoon after losing to his compatriot Aslan Karatsev 6:7 (1) and 4:6. Karatsev meets either Argentina's Pedro Cachin or Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinals. Karatsev has already defeated the German in the second round of qualification. However, Struff has made the best of his second chance as a lucky loser in Madrid so far.

As does Daniel Altmaier. After a surprisingly clear 6: 3 and 6: 0 against Jaume Munar, he is already in the quarterfinals.
