Alexander Zverev's 13th match win in a row and his fourth triumph in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament didn't come to anything. Instead, Daniil Medvedev won his first title of the year with a 5: 7, 6: 4 and 6: 1 - and his third after Cincinnati and Shanghai in 2019 at this level. In the internal balance with Zverev, the man from Moscow put it 2: 5.

Zverev and Medvedev are known as fast players, both of them rarely use the 25 seconds between rallies to the full. The fact that twelve games were over after a little over 40 minutes came as a surprise. The good news for Zverev: He had two games more than his opponent on the credit side, acknowledged the 7: 5 with a small emotional outburst. Especially since Medvedev had defended Zverev's first two chances to win the set.

The first three games in the second act, on the other hand, took 20 minutes to complete. Which was mainly due to the server Zverev, who, despite some problems, made it 2: 1. After eight debut and several break chances for Medvedev. In the ninth game the time had come: Medvedev made his first break of the day, he took a 5: 4 lead. And served to compensate for sentences without any problems.

And Daniil Medvedev went on cheerfully, got the first service game from Zverev in the decisive set. Also because the German sank two not impossible volleys in the net. Zverev missed four chances for the immediate re-break in the next game, Medvedev made it 3-0 with the next break. Medvedev looked fresher than his opponent from the middle of the second set, which was reflected in the third set in the fact that Medvedev was able to win most of the longer rallies.

The two Paris finalists now have a few days to prepare for the final of the eight best players of the year. The matches in London's O2 Arena begin next Sunday. Zverev was able to win the ATP Finals in 2018, Medvedev had no match success at its premiere last year.
