Alexander Zverev (ATP 6) retired in the knockout round at the ATP indoor hard court tournament in the French capital, worth just under 5.8 million euros. The 22-year-old from Hamburg lost to Canadian talent Denis Shapovalov (ATP 28) with 2: 6, 7: 5, 2: 6. Also Jan-Lennard Struff (ATP 36) had to defeat after a tight three-set defeat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (ATP 35).
Zverev, who had already qualified for the ATP final in France with his second-round victory over Fernando Verdasco , got off to a bad start at Court 1 against the 20-year-old Canadian and lost two serve games in the first set. In the second round, the eleven-time ATP champion caught the service twice from Shapovalov. As on the opposite side of the Canadians only managed a break, Zverev decided the second set just 7: 5 for themselves. In the third round, the German number one managed no more break. Shapovalov, on the other hand, did a good job of dismissing the Hamburger twice and winning 6-2.
Struff awards two match balls
In Zverevs compatriot Struff the defeat was extremely unhappy. The 29-year-old Warsteiner started well on Court Central, beating local hero Tsonga twice in the first set and winning 6-2. In the second round Tsonga then handed a break to the sentence just to decide 6: 4 for themselves. In the end, the tiebreak had to endure, in which Struff had a bitter end. After two awarded match balls from Struff at the score of 6: 4 Tsonga turned the game and won after four points in series with 8: 6.
