He, Dominic Thiem, had a lot to do against a strong Marton Fucsovics - and in a very respectable match.

Fucsovics got off to a strong start and made the break straight away, Thiem had a rebreak chance at 1: 2 twice, especially the first missed opportunity was bitter: Fucsovics played serve and volley, Thiem returned brilliantly in front of his feet, made the following stop and over-praised the Hungarians - but his (very high) emergency praise he smashed out. Fucsovics parried the second chance brilliantly.

At 2: 3 things went better, Thiem again had two chances to equalize, the second he used thanks to an energetic forehand. In the following service game, Thiem parried a 0:30 and 30:40, he carelessly missed a chance to 4: 3 with a drive volley out, Fucsovics then showed great class and got the long service game for another break. And after two more games about debut: the first set. /

There were six break chances on both sides, but Thiem only used one - his opponent three. Fucsovics was also the clear playmaker with 16 winners (at Thiems 6).

Tiebreak goes to Thiem

In round two, Fucsovics had a great chance to make it 2-0 when a Thiem stop was too long, but the forehand flew exactly into Thiem's run, who was able to bring in a wonderful praise and pulled his head out of the loop. In the following service game he couldn't do that anymore, two forehand errors in a row brought Fucsovics 3-1. But who then had a little slack, Thiem came to the direct rebreak.

Both players came in a row to sovereign service games, the tiebreak hung by a thread, but Thiem showed a great overview at 4: 5 and strong defense to equalize the set at 6: 5.

The statistics also showed that the game had turned a bit in terms of "dominance": Thiem was 16 winners and 16 mistakes without need, Fucsovics was 9: 4.

In the decision, Thiem pulled away 3-0, Fucsovics had left a 15:40 shortly before, partly through his own fault. The Lichtenwörther then managed the second break when he had to process the Fucsovics posted on the network several times, but ultimately did so successfully. Thiem now had full control of the match - and no longer gave up a game.

Fucsovics missed his second victory over a top 10 opponent: In 19 matches he managed only 1 victory here, in 2020 at the French Open against "clay court lover" Daniil Medvedev .

The next opponent for Thiem is Gianluca Mager or Lorenzo Sonego.
