Defending champion Novak Djokovic leads the field at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai. Like all of the first eight on the seed list, the Serb enjoys a walk-through in round one, with either Denis Shapovalov or Frances Tiafoe at the start. Potential quarter-final opponent Djokovics is Stefanos Tsitsipas, who could face Félix Auger-Aliassime in his first match. Against which he traditionally doesn't look good.

Roger Federer greets from the lowest position in the tableau. For him, there could be a reissue of the Wimbledon final in 2017 or the Australian Open final in 2018 in the first match: Marin Cilic plays against Albert Ramos-Vinolas in round one, and if he wins, meets the Maestro.

Rafael Nadal is missing in Shanghai

In the round of eight there would be a duel between Federer and Alexander Zverev according to the seed list , the German number one starts after a walk-through against a qualifier or Kyle Edmund. Jan-Lennard Struff, the German number two, opened against Matteo Berrettini.

Dominic Thiem is in fourth place due to the absence of Rafael Nadal, for the Austrian the first task in Shanghai is not terrible: it is either against a qualifier or Ze Zhang from China. Roberto Baustista-Agut could wait for Thiem in the quarterfinals.

Difficult lot for Marach and Melzer

The draw for Jürgen Melzer and Oliver Marach was rather modest: The two Austrian veterans have to compete against the number one duo Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah right away. French Open winners Andreas Mies and Kevin Krawietz meet Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic. The only other German-speaking starter in doubles is Jan-Lennard Struff, who has to compete with Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram with Fernando Verdasco.
