"The sky is the limit for them". Coco Gauff had probably not heard much greater praise up to this point in her young life. These were the words of Venus Williams - her seven-time single Grand Slam winner - who again had to surrender to the 15-year-old child prodigy at the Australian Open.

As in Wimbledon last year, Gauff showed the limits of her great idol , but the teenager made a few differences compared to the first round game in London: "This time I was definitely more confident. I am used to playing on big courts." In addition, their serve and the basic hits were significantly more aggressive than in the British capital, said Gauff.

Gauff: "I think I can beat any opponent"

The American does not want to be satisfied after the 7: 6 (5) and 6: 3 success in Melbourne. "I think I can beat any opponent. If you go into a match and are afraid of someone, you will lose - and I don't want that," said Gauff, explaining her way of thinking.

In general, the Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne is just the beginning of a great career. Because Gauff has one goal: to become the best player of all time. "My mission is to be the biggest. My goal is to win as many Grand Slams as possible," said the 15-year-old after her game against Williams.

Second round duel against Cirstea

But first of all, the focus of the world ranking list 67 is. still at the first major event of the year. In round two, Gauff faces Sorana Cirstea before round three could see Naomi Osaka again - at the US Open, the American slipped into a bad defeat .

After she left New York, she would have rethought, Gauff said: "I realized that I have to play my game and shouldn't think too much about what people think about me." In the first round at the Australian Open, she seems to have at least succeeded. This is not the only reason why we can look forward to where the "child prodigy's" journey in Melbourne will go.
