The 2020 French Open winner beat Sorana Cirstea (WTA No. 38) 5: 7, 6: 3, 6: 3
Swiatek didn't get into the match well, looked for her rhythm for a long time, but slowly fought her way in. In the end, both players had more mistakes without need than winning strokes in the statistics, Swiatek was slightly better than her opponent with 6 break chances from 14 possibilities.
"The match took a lot of energy, it was difficult to stay calm," said Swiatek afterwards. "My stress level was higher throughout the match than in previous games," she said, explaining her tears after the win.
Swiatek is now waiting for the winner of the match between Aryna Sabalenka and Kaia Kanepi.
Previously, Danielle Collins and Alizé Cornet had reached the quarterfinals.
