The tennis world number eight, Belinda Bencic, will not start at the US Open in New York. "I made the difficult decision not to take part in the US tournament and I will return to the tour in Rome next month," said the 23-year-old Swiss woman in a statement on Saturday. Last year Bencic had reached the semifinals of the US Open.
Most recently, numerous top players had already canceled the tournament (from August 31st). Among other things, the two defending champions Bianca Andreescu and the 19-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will not participate. So the men have shown themselves to be much more willing to play than the women. While five of the top 10 players will not start in the women's field, only three will do so in the men's field.
However, if you look at the world rankings outside the top ten, the situation looks a lot better. From tenth to 29th, the women - as of now - will not be missing, Quiang Wang in 29th place is the next best-ranked player who canceled her start in the USA. A WTA Premier Five event will also take place before the US Open with the Western & Southern Open.
