Bernard Tomic actually wanted to start again in 2022. In a spectacular video in the style of "Rocky" he declared at the end of last year that he had learned from his mistakes: "I'm back, really! I'm hungry and ready. Nobody can stop me except myself," said he , backed by pictures of the iron-hard fitness training. /

"Hard work pays off," he said, saying that he had already come back and had a score to settle.

So far nothing has come of all the good intentions. At the Australian Open, the Australian lost directly in qualifying round 1 and indicated during the match that he might be carrying around a corona infection, which was even confirmed. During the year he fell ill with COVID again. And tennis-wise: Ran only a little together.

From world ranking 262 he went down to 825, only three wins in nine defeats were in his statistics until the end of July.

But now the 29-year-old is celebrating a double sense of achievement: at ITF tournaments in Cancun he won two titles in just a short time, which he celebrated on Instagram with one of the good old motivational sayings: "There is no secret to success. It requires preparation, hard work and the ability to learn from mistakes."

In a corresponding Insta story, he also explained : F*** the haters. I'm gonna prove them wrong."

Kyrgios on Tomic victory: "Incredible"

Is colleague Nick Kyrgios one of the "haters"? Tomic and Kyrgios have a love-hate relationship, at the end of 2021 both had challenged each other via social media and claimed to be the better of the two.

Kyrgios gave his answer on the field this year, with a place in the Wimbledon final and a comeback in the top 20. Tomic, who was also there once, is still a long way from that.

Kyrgios reacted sarcastically to Tomic's tournament victory in Mexico: "Incredible." Garnished with a hearty laughing emoji.

Will Tomic be able to rise to the top of the world again? It remains one of the big questions. In the live ranking, Bernie has made up some places and is currently in 574th place.
