Loss in round two: What was going on, Mr. Thiem?

Dominic Thiem was surprisingly clearly eliminated on Tuesday night (CET) at the Western & Southern Open in New York. Against Filip Krajinovic he received a 2: 6, 1: 6 rejection after only 61 minutes (click here for the match report ).

Thiem got off to a cruel start while his opponent put pressure on and made no mistakes. With his own serve, Thiem got into trouble, with the return he saw no country.

"It was just a terrible match for me," Thiem is quoted on the ATP homepage. "I didn't play well at all, got no rhythm at all. It felt like I didn't win a single point on serve."

Thiem switched to serve and volley in the second movement and wanted to force a trend reversal. It did not work. "I had a lot of problems returning. It's hard to understand what just happened, but I'll think about it and hopefully find better answers in the next few days." Physically, however, everything is in perfect order.

Krajinovic: "Everything went in my direction"

It was Thiem's clearest defeat on the ATP tour since April 2018, when he only played two games against Rafael Nadal in Monte Carlo. Krajinovic is now in the round of 16 and meets Marton Fucsovics.

"I started well and was aggressive," said the Serb. It was his first full match win over a top 10 player, once he benefited from a task from Novak Djokovic. "I don't think Thiem played good tennis, but I took my chance and deserved to win. My preparation for this match was good. Everything went in my direction today."

On August 31, the US Open will begin on the same facility, where Thiem was eliminated in the first round last year. The draw will take place on Thursday.
