In case of doubt, he would still be available for the Davis Cup in November. Of course, he also wants to play the French Open and Wimbledon. Marach explained this to the Kleine Zeitung .
The reason for the resignation: the corona pandemic. The two-week quarantine in Melbourne threw him back extremely physically. "Corona cost me a lot, both physically and financially. Since the pandemic, things have actually only gone downhill."
The financial losses also play a role in the decision of the double Australian Open winner from 2018. "I've always said that as long as I can make good money out of tennis, I'll accept not being able to see my family that often." But that is currently no longer the case. Because of the pandemic and the reduction in prize money, "you only pay on top of the 250 tournaments." Since March of last year, he has had more expenses than income.
Marach: There's more to be earned at home in Panama
Marach has been on the tour since 1998, but now lives in Panama. With coaching lessons there, he would earn more, he explained, and he was with his family, whom he had not seen since the end of December.
Marach is currently at the ATP tournament in Acapulco, there alongside Marin Cilic. The two will meet the top seeded Macel Granollers and Horiacio Zeballos in round 1 on Wednesday night.
Marach is currently ranked 29th in the double ATP ranking. In 2018 he was already in second place. He has won 23 titles in his career.
