The German Davis Cup team made a great start to the new final tournament in Madrid and the quarter-finals in mind. The selection of the German Tennis Federation (DTB) was in their first game in Group C Argentina before the final doubles unassailable 2-0 ahead. Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) surprised with the 6: 3, 7: 6 (8) against the favored Diego Schwartzman, previously had veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber his team with a feat of strength at 1: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 against Guido Pella led.

A victory against Chile on Thursday (from 11.00 clock / DAZN) would mean the group victory and thus qualifying for the quarter-finals. The Argentinians had won their opening match against Chile 3-0 on Tuesday. The doubles with French Open winners Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies (Coburg / Cologne) on Wednesday were no longer decisive for victory or defeat.

Struff was not impressed by the loud Argentine fans on the barely filled with just under 1500 spectators Court 2. He took the US Open quarter-finalist Schwartzman equal to his first service match to 2: 0 and gave the advantage no longer, after 41 minutes, he took a sentence.

Another 5: 4 break for the Warsteiner seemed to be the preliminary decision, but Schwartzman counterattacked immediately, fending off a matchball strikes and holding on to the match. After 1:49 hours, Struff took advantage of his fourth opportunity to win in a tiebreaker.

The initially tense Kohlschreiber had more problems, too often found his master at the beginning of his match in the baseline books in Pella. The first set was lost after just 37 minutes.

In the German box also Boris Becker fevered. The boss of the German men's tennis team boss Michael Kohlmann before the second set with some tips along the way - with success. Kohlschreiber got into the match better, celebrated his first break to 4: 2 and a little later the set compensation. With another break, the Augsburg made the perfect start in the decision set, after 1:55 hours he finished the game with his fifth match point.

In the much-criticized format that has been practiced since this year, the winners of the six groups of three and the two best second qualify for the quarter-finals, with the final taking place on Sunday.
