Dominic Thiem not quite fit yet - but already in New York

Dominic Thiem landed in New York after his cold. For Dennis Novak, however, this time it will be nothing with a gig in the "Big Apple".

A slight sigh of relief among Dominic Thiem fans. The Lichtenwörther is doing better, although he is still not completely fit. /

After his cancellation for the Masters tournament in Cincinnati , Thiem had spent a few days in bed, but was now so far on his feet that he could fly. "At the moment everything is going according to plan. He wasn't fit, so it is not wise to get on the plane," said Thiem manager Herwig Straka in an interview with APA . "I spoke to him on the phone, he sounds a lot better."

Thiem plans to prepare for the US Open on Randall's Island in Manhattan, at John McEnroe's Academy. A medical check-up in New York should nevertheless follow.

Thiem himself reported from sick leave via Instagram. "I have spent a lot of time in bed the past few days, looked through a few old photos and found this masterpiece when I played the US Open as a blondie," Thiem wrote under a photo from 2015 with a blond-colored mane. At that time he had made it to the third round, in which he was inferior to Kevin Anderson.

Last year, Thiem had reached the quarter-finals in New York and then lost to Rafael Nadal in one of the best matches of the year - in the tiebreak of the fifth set.

This year Thiem will be fourth in the US Open.

No US Open for Dennis Novak

So while the prospects for Thiem seem good, buddy Dennis Novak has had to cancel his appearance at the US Open. He had injured his thigh in the German tennis Bundesliga last Sunday, "tugging and torn a few muscle fibers," said Novak. He hoped to be able to train again on Wednesday and then play at the Mallorca Challenger.

Novak had survived the Flushing Meadows qualification last year, but then lost to Benoit Paire at the start of the main draw.
