Jan-Lennard Struff stretched his fist into the Parisian evening sky and cheered over his hard-fought opening victory, Andrea Petkovic did not want to hide the disappointment about her failed comeback. On a Monday at the French Open that was mixed up by rain, the ranks of German professionals thinned further.

While Struff took the leap as the third German professional after Alexander Zverev and Dominik Koepfer after his 3: 6, 7: 6 (5), 6: 3, 6: 7 (2), 6: 3 success against the American Frances Tiafoe made it into the second round, the tournament is already over for Angelique Kerber: The German number one had to wait a long time before she was allowed to play against Kaya Juvan on court 14. Then it happened quickly: The Slovenian won 6: 3 and 6: 3.

Almost a year after her last tour match so far, Andrea Petkovic lost her first round duel at the French Open against Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkowa 3: 6, 3: 6. "I really noticed in the first few games that I was stressed," said Petkovic at the press conference with a thick ice pack on her battered knee: "I didn't feel very self-confident." Hamburg's Tamara Korpatsch also failed against the American Amanda Anisimova with 2: 6, 0: 6.

Struff is the third German after Alexander Zverev and Dominik Koepfer to make it into round two. There could be a duel within Germany for Jan-Lennard Struff. Then namely when Daniel Altmaier should win against Feliciano Lopez.
