Maximilian Marterer missed the hoped-for jump into the second round of the French Open. The 25-year-old from Nuremberg was defeated on Monday in Paris by the Serb Filip Krajinovic 4: 6, 1: 6, 6: 7 (3: 7). Marterer had played his way into the main field through qualification. His best result in Roland Garros remains the round of 16 in 2018.

Marterer, after Yannick Hanfmann (Karlsruhe) and Oscar Otte (Cologne), who lost in five sets in the direct duel to Alexander Zverev (Hamburg), was the third German to fail in the first round of the men's singles at this year's edition. A few minutes later, Peter Gojowczyk met the same fate. The Dachauer lost against the Italian Ginaluca Mager with 2: 6, 6: 3, 4: 6 and 5: 7
