The 32-year-old New Zealander is one of two doubles (alongside Bruno Soares) who will represent the players on the ATP Tour in the new players' council. The nomination? It came as a surprise, as Daniell revealed to tvnz.co.nz.
"I still have to make it really clear to myself that I have equal rights at the table," said Daniell with regard to meetings with tennis legends like Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer. "It will be difficult, on the other hand I will keep my ears open and try to soak everything up like a sponge." He looks forward to finding out "how your mind works."
Daniell, currently number 45 in doubles, is primarily supposed to represent the interests of the doubles players, but has just as much a vote as everyone else in votes. One topic he wants to tackle: environmental protection.
"We are a pretty dirty tour," said Daniell. "Not in the sense of how the tournaments are held. But considering that we have to fly to almost all events. And of course, flying is pretty tough on the environment. That will be a big issue that I want to address in my tenure. "
These are the members of the ATP Player's Council
Current members of the new ATP Players' Council are Felix Auger-Aliassime, Roger Federer, John Millman and Rafael Nadal (top 50 in singles), Pablo Andujar and Gilles Simon (range 51 - 100 in singles), Marcus Daniell and Bruno Soares (top 100 Doubles), Kevin Anderson and Andy Murray (At-Large), Colin Dowdeswell (Alumni Rep) and Daniel Vallverdu (Trainer Rep).
Novak Djokovic recently flirted with a return, but then removed himself from the nomination list due to a conflict of interest with the PTPA he founded.
