"My big plan is to be there at the Olympics," said the Grand Slam record champion in a video conversation on a Japanese online platform: "Let's hope the best that the Olympic Games can take place in Tokyo next year. That's one of my big goals. "

The Swiss has already celebrated 20 Grand Slam titles in his career, won a total of 103 tournaments on the ATP Tour, in 2008 in Beijing, Federer also won Olympic gold in doubles alongside his compatriot Stan Wawrinka - but the victory in singles is the only big title he's still missing. In 2012 he failed in the Olympic final at Wimbledon against the Scottish Andy Murray, in 2000 in Sydney in the semifinals against the German Tommy Haas.

In 2016, Federer had to cancel his participation in Rio due to his knee operation.

Federer: Postponement to 2021 not bad at all?

Federer is currently preparing for his comeback on the tour, after two knee operations he ended his season in the summer . "Maybe it wasn't bad for me personally that the Olympic Games were postponed," said Federer, who wants to return to the Australian Open this spring. The summer games in Tokyo were supposed to take place in 2020, but were postponed for a year due to the corona pandemic.

The Federer family loved Japan after a visit last year. His wife Mirka "love the country and the culture, and so do I," said Federer: "My children still talk so much about Japan, too. I'm really amazed at the positive impact this experience has left on them."
