"Selfish": Nick Kyrgios against hosting the US Open

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has criticized the planned opening of the US Open in view of the pressing social problems.

"The ATP wants to let the US Open play. That is selfish in view of what is going on there," the Australian professional wrote on Twitter.

"It's about the corona pandemic, but it's also about the riots," Kyrgios wrote of the anti-racism protests after George Floyd's death. "We have to overcome these challenges together before tennis returns." Games have been suspended since mid-March, the French Open has been postponed, Wimbledon has been canceled.

The US Open is to be held in New York from August 31 under strict hygiene and quarantine requirements . Novak Djokovic, the world's number one, has indicated that he will not start because of the "extreme" measures. Among other things, there should probably be no spectators on site and the players may only bring one supervisor per head.
