Paul beat defending champion Denis Shapovalov 6: 4, 2: 6 and 6: 4 in the final.
Paul had the first break opportunities in the third round at 2: 2, when the score was 3: 4 he had to make up for a 15:40 himself. At 4: 4 the decisive break - to zero. He then served to his greatest triumph also to zero. In other words: Paul made all of the last 12 points of the match.
Tommy Paul: Victories over Fritz, Murray, Tiafoe
The tournament victory is more than deserved. To start with, Paul had defeated Leo Borg, the young talent and son of tennis legend Björn Borg; then with Taylor Fritz, Andy Murray and in the semifinals Frances Tiafoe three players who were in a good mood recently.
For Paul it is the first tournament victory on the ATP tour, in his first played final.
The 24-year-old won the French Open as a junior in 2015 (in the final against Taylor Fritz), but the switch to the men's tour was not directly successful. Paul only cracked the top 100 at the end of 2019, this year he made it into the top 60.
Thanks to his victory in Stockholm and the 250 points, he will crack the top 50 for the first time on Monday and is expected to be in 43rd place.
