Philipp Kohlschreiber celebrated a tournament victory at the beginning of the year: The German veteran won the title at the Challenger event that was moved from Canberra to Bedingo because of the bushfires in Australia. Kohlschreiber defeated Emil Ruusuvuori from Finland in the final and was able to go to the Australian Open in good form and with good self-confidence. There he won in round one against Marcus Giron in three sets, but could not play for the next match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Because of an abdominal muscle injury .

Kohlschreiber started after a few days break in Rotterdam, where he lost to Daniel Evans after qualifying in round one. The last match win on the ATP tour in 2020 followed in Dubai: in the opening match against Mohamed Safwat.

No ATP Tour victory for Kohlschreiber after the restart

Because after the restart, nothing worked for Philipp Kohlschreiber at the highest professional level. Also because the draw didn't always mean it well with the now 37-year-old: At the US Open Kohlschreiber showed a strong performance against Vasek Pospisil, but the Canadian knew how to prevail and then played other excellent matches. Jannik Sinner was waiting for the start in Kitzbühel, which also went wrong from Kohlschreiber's point of view.

The defeat against Fabio Fognini in Hamburg was certainly annoying, while the match-up with Cristian Garin in Roland Garros was not a good one. The Chilean had proven to be one of the best clay court players during the season, winning against Kohlschreiber at the French Open in four sets.

So what remains of a season that Philipp Kohlschreiber ended with a defeat against Marco Cecchinato in the second round of the Challenger in Parma and which left him at position 97 of the ATP charts? First and foremost, the big question is how things will continue. Will the veteran go to the Australian quarantine in order to play the first major of the year? And: What about the 500th match win on the ATP Tour? At the moment Kohlschreiber has 470 successes, so that would still be a long way for the exceptional German player.
