You can't get out of the statistics anymore. One thing is certain: Anyone who would have guessed a final between Leylah Fernandez and Emma Raducanu in the run-up to the US Open 2021 would be a rich person.
The Canadian Leylah Fernandez is a surprise: She made it into the main field as number 73 in the world - and sent three top 5 players home there: First Naomi Osaka (3rd) in the third round, then Elina Svitolina ( 5.) in the quarterfinals. And in the semifinals Aryna Sabalenka (2nd). Oh yes: And in between also Angelique Kerber , the winner from 2016, and again in strong form since the summer.
Raducanu with a record: As a qualifier in the final
At least as impressive was the run of Briton Emma Raducanu: She had to play three more games, first had to qualify - and then rushed through the peloton: She only played 27 (!) Games here, she didn't lose a set, on the contrary - none went closer than 6: 4. Raducanu is the first ever female qualifier to ever make it into a Grand Slam tournament final.
The crazy thing: Although she had to play three more games, Raducanu was 11 hours and 34 minutes shorter than Leylah Fernandez with 12 hours and 45 minutes.
Fernandez (19 years old) against Raducanu (18 years old) is also the first teenage final at the US Open since the duel between Martina Hingis and Serena Williams in 1999. Fernandez and Raducanu weren't even born back then ...
