Angelique Kerber averted an impending first round at the US Open with fighting strength and great nerves: The former world number one sat on the opening day of the Grand Slam tournament in New York in an extremely close match 3: 6, 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 3) against the Ukrainian Dajana Jastremska and now meets her compatriot Angelina Kalinina.

Kerber, the tournament winner in 2016, last caused a stir with her semi-finals in Wimbledon and Cincinnati and only failed because of the eventual tournament winner Ashleigh Barty (Australia).

She had problems against Jastremska from the start. Jastremska, who had been suspended from the tour for six months into the summer and then acquitted, dominated the too passive Kerber, who came back. In the third set it went back and forth, the three-time Grand Slam winner was already 3: 5 behind, but fought like crazy for every point.

Kerber had been raised by Boris Becker before the start of the tournament in the circle of title contenders. The German top player, meanwhile, emphasized that she wanted to tackle round by round. "I like to hand over the role of favorite to the others," she said at Eurosport. Last year Kerber failed in the round of 16 in New York.
