Rublev won 6: 0, 6: 4, 6: 0 in just 1 hour and 24 minutes of play and is the first player from the lower half of the table in the round of 16.
Rublev hammered 17 aces on the opposite side, a total of 35 winners, and he also earned 13 breakballs, of which he used 8.
The 22-year-old is currently 14th in the world, in New York he is 10th.
A year ago he launched his renewed attack on the top of the world after being in the top 40 but then falling out of the top 100. His run included a final in Hamburg and a quarter-final in Cincinnati - on the way there he powered Roger Federer off the pitch.
At the US Open it went to the round of 16, where it was over against Matteo Berrettini. He could meet the Italian again if he wins his game against Casper Ruud.
