In her first match after the Australian Open at the beginning of the year, Angelique Kerber didn't let anything go: After things went back and forth in the first set against Ajla Tomljanovic, Kerber kept getting better and better as the match continued, dominating the rallies with her forehand . With a score of 5: 2 in the second set, the 2016 winner had to give up her serve again, but after a playing time of 89 minutes she prevailed 6: 4 and 6: 4.

A successful premiere for the returned coach Torben Beltz, with whom Kerber was successful four years ago in Flushing Meadows.

In round two there could be a German duel: Kerber will meet the winner of the game between Anna-Lena Friedsam and the American Caroline Dolehide on Wednesday.
